Moratorium has been extended by City Council

Whatcom County property owners are angry as City Council decides to extend the 60-day moratorium that was set in place a couple months ago and would have ended this month. This means that new developments are restrained from counting on exempt wells in areas of Whatcom County. Kie Relyea of Bellingham Herald writes, “County officials have said they needed more time to find solutions – and to come into compliance – after the state Supreme Court ruled the county failed to protect water resources as required by the Growth Management Act.”

While the council voted 5-2 on Tuesday to approve the measure, not everyone supported the decision, including council members Barbara Brenner and Ken Mann. “I am so upset by the position that it has put Whatcom County in and the position it has put people in…” Mann commented.

This leaves property owners in a position that allows them to build homes under certain conditions, until further changes are made.
